Does Your Child Have TMD?
Headache, earache, dizziness,
neck stiffness and pain that radiates outward from the temporomandibular joints
(TMJs) — the “hinges” of the jaw — are all symptoms of temporomandibular joint
dysfunction (TMD). While most people have heard of this disorder, they are
often surprised to learn that it affects children as well as adults.
If you suspect that your
child may have TMD, it is important to get an evaluation from a chiropractor,
as well as from a pediatric dentist. This is because TMD isn’t just a dental
problem. Studies show this all-too-common condition is often linked to
misalignment of spinal bones in the neck.
TMD may cause changes in the spine
and adjacent muscles. The reverse is also true: Changes in the spine and
adjacent muscles may lead to TMD. These changes can have serious consequences
if they aren’t corrected, particularly in children. Unidentified spinal
misalignments can set a child up for a lifetime of health problems.
TMD may also be triggered by
misalignment of the temporomandibular joint itself. The good news is that
chiropractic care has been shown to effectively realign the joints of the spine
and jaw, alleviating TMD in both children and adults.
